Patterns & tutorials

Are the patterns on Pattern Swirl free?

Yes — every pattern published on the blog is free to read and make. Some patterns are also offered as premium, ad-free PDFs in the shop for anyone who prefers a printable version.

Do you use US or UK crochet terms?

All patterns use US terms. If you learned with UK terms, use the abbreviations & US/UK conversion chart.

I am a complete beginner. Where should I start?

Head to the Start Here page. It walks you through supplies, basic stitches, reading patterns and choosing a first project.

My project is a different size than the pattern. Why?

Almost always it is gauge (tension). Everyone crochets a little differently. Make a small swatch and compare it to the pattern’s gauge; if you have more stitches per 10 cm / 4 in, go up a hook size, and if you have fewer, go down a size.

Can I use a different yarn?

Usually, yes — choose a yarn of the same weight and similar fiber, then check your gauge. The yarn weight chart helps you find a good match.

I think I found a mistake in a pattern.

Thank you! Please contact me with the pattern name and the row or round number and I will check and correct it.

Why are there ads on the blog?

Ads and affiliate links help keep the patterns free. If you would rather have an ad-free version, check the PDF patterns in the shop.

What are affiliate links?

Some links to supplies are affiliate links. If you buy through them, Pattern Swirl may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Read the Affiliate Disclosure.
